What is the first thought that pops into your head when you hear the word “fall”? If you’re like many of us, your mind immediately pictures leaves in shades of vibrant oranges and reds. These majestic colors only last for a short season, but they are well worth the wait. We’ve put together a guide to the best fall foliage tours on Cape Cod, MA.
There are so many ways to get out and see nature’s beauty. We have highlighted some of the best tours of the Cape’s autumnal colors — from hiking to biking and driving to boating. Cape Cod is unique in that we have a slightly warmer climate than other New England areas. Our leaf peeping lasts just a few weeks longer, and the best times are from late October into November.
Hit the Trails
Lace up your tennis shoes or boots, and head for the trails. Some of the best fall colors are seen without any fancy equipment or reservations. Trails, beaches, parks, and the woods all have different aspects of trees and nature in store. One of our favorite hiking spots is Nickerson State Park in Brewster. This park features 1,900 acres of woods and ponds and plenty of roaming wildlife too. Take a little time to plan a hike that meets your skill level. An easy hike is the Eddy Bay Trail on Lower Road in Brewster. For a bit more of a challenge, the Dead Neck Trail in South Cape Beach State Park will make you break a sweat. To really get the blood pumping, Mt. Zig Trail in Falmouth fits the bill. Stretch your legs and scope out some fabulous foliage!
Biking Byways
Another way to survey the harvest-time beauty is by bicycle. Load up your own wheels, or check out some of our local rental shops like Little Capistrano or Idle Times. Two of our favorite bike routes also happen to be old railroad routes that have been reclaimed. We’ve written about the Rail Trail before, and we would also recommend the Shining Sea Bikeway. Fall is an absolutely amazing time for biking around the Cape. The tourist crowds have eased and the weather just makes you want to enjoy the great outdoors.
Driving Tours
It’s time to hit the road! Taking a motor tour of Cape Cod is a nice way to cover some miles and see all the variety of foliage colors. Not just trees, but cranberry bogs and salt marshes also provide stunning colors of rich crimson and golden yellows. If time permits, we encourage you to branch off on smaller streets and routes. For example, off Route 26, you’ll want to explore the lesser-traveled coastal roads. Definitely hop on 6A from Barnstable Village toward Sandwich. Follow some of these suggested routes, or create a circuit of your own. Enjoy the autumn beauty from the comfort of your own vehicle.
Other Ways to Tour the Fall Foliage
Here are a few more ways to combine some of your favorite hobbies with the opportunity of nature’s fall fashion show:
- Boating. Waters small or big, kayak or cruise boat, you’ll be surrounded by glorious views no matter which way you look. The Mashpee River and The Autumn Bay Cruise are worth the time!
- Golfing. Grab a partner and some clubs to play 9 or 18 holes. Ensconce yourself in the autumnal vistas. We want to highlight Bayberry Hills Golf Course, but you’ll find so many options on the golf map.
- Snacking. Picnicking and wine sampling are enjoyable any time of the year, but pair them with some leaf peeping, and you’re all set. One of our favorite locales is the Salt Pond in Eastham — perfect for picnics. Pick up a bottle or two of wine to go along with your picnic lunch and maybe even try cranberry wine! We like Cape Cod Winery and Truro Vineyards.
We hope you feel well prepared to take in all the fall foliage tours on Cape Cod.
